Introduction
About GIS Career Forum
With the proliferation of GIS technology in various fields there is a huge
demand for GIS professionals by many companies and government
organizations, generally in the Middle East and especially in UAE.
However, due to lack of awareness among UAE Nationals about the technology
and the opportunities that abound in the field, there is now a huge discrepancy in this field between UAE National and expatriates and today
very few Emiratis occupies a GIS or GIS-related position. GIS Career Forum aims to address this issue and provide a venue for Nationals to learn more about GIS technology and the opportunities and skills needed for a GIS career. The event will feature a day long introductory workshop on ArcGIS software, a short presentation about GIS technology and career in this field, and an exhibition by government organizations about their GIS implementation programs and GIS career opportunities. |
What is GIS and what is a GIS career?
A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. GIS technology can be integrated into any enterprise information system framework. GIS is often associated with making maps, but GIS professionals do much more than that. GIS is used to manage human activities. GIS professionals use GIS to visualize, analyze, and model systems to help in the planning and decision-making processes of their organizations. They make geographic information accessible to scientists, planners, decision makers, and the public. As a result, GIS professionals have an opportunity to make a real difference in the world. GIS careers exist in every imaginable discipline, from environmental science to mining to urban planning to commercial businesses to defense and beyond. |
